“But he who is a hireling and not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.

“He who is a hireling, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, beholds the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep, and flees, and the wolf snatches them, and scatters them.

The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.

The one who is a paid helper and not a shepherd, whose very own the sheep are not, watches with a discerning eye the wolf as he is coming, and sends away the sheep and flees, because he is a paid helper and it is not a concern to him regarding the sheep, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
Phillips’ Modern English

But the hired man, who is not the shepherd, and does not own the sheep, will see the wolf coming, desert the sheep and run away. And the wolf will attack the flock and send them flying.
